Education Archive: School Year Programs

Wassaic X Webutuck

The Wassaic X Webutuck school year partnership program brings select Wassaic Artist Residents into the art classes at Webutuck Public High School in Amenia, NY. These Wassaic Artist Resident Education Fellows share their work with the students and lead hands-on projects that explore central themes in contemporary art. Through Wassaic X Webutuck students explore critical thinking through creative problem solving, gain greater understanding of contemporary art practices, and learn about career possibilities in the arts. Recent WXW projects include stop-motion animation, motivational (or subversive) posters, performance art, and counter-mapping.

This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by Arts Mid-Hudson.

The Wassaic Project partners with the North East Community Center Junior High Clubs, a program that offers free after-school clubs for 7-8th grade students at Eugene Brooks Intermediary School. Recent Wassaic Project Clubs have Haunted House Club, in which students worked with art collective Whoop Dee Doo on the Wassaic Project’s Haunted Mill, and Mask-Making for the Wassaic Project Community Day Parade with Education Fellow Ryann Slauson.

Field trip groups will tour the Project’s historic buildings, which include a converted grain elevator turned exhibition space and an auction barn turned studio and workshop, and visit the studios of resident artists. K-12 groups may also sign up for an extended visit, which will include a hands-on project.
