2012: Leisure Work

Curated by Timothy Nazzaro, Amy Russo, and Hallie Scott

August 3rd – 5th, 2012
Location: Wassaic Project Grounds

Where is the boundary between art and leisure? In recent decades, artists and institutions have increasingly turned to the sites and activities of leisure in an effort to expand traditional dynamics of display. Yet, paradoxically, in today’s content-hungry art economy, when does any artist have free time?

Leisure Work addresses the intersection between art and leisure through site specific installations, events and performances. This exhibition, organized for the Wassaic Project’s 2012 Summer Festival, includes works that consider recreation, tourism, and escape, and the influence of these concepts on art making and viewing today. The contributing artists engage with the ephemeral festival experience, infusing Wassaic’s bucolic landscape with sites for play and contemplation.
