Location: the Maxon Mills
The Wassaic Project Presents Outside-In, a group show of landscape-based paintings, drawings, photographs and sculpture by established and emerging contemporary artists. Curated by Sally Zunino, Sally Morgan-Lehman and Liz Parks, the exhibition will run from Saturday, July 4 through Sunday, July 26 at the Maxon Mills Granary in Wassaic, NY. An opening reception with hot dogs, beer and fireworks will be held on Friday, July 3 from 6-11pm.
In its simplest interpretation, Outside-In pays homage to its exhibition space, Maxon Mills, a former granary. Where grains were once brought from local fields into this space for storage and packaging, the exhibition similarly brings a focus on the outside world to the granary’s interior walls. Moreover, Outside-In explores the inherent tension between nature in its pure, undisturbed state, and the constraints or manipulations put upon it by humans. The result often turns typical notions of landscape-based art on its head, effectively rendering it outside-in.
